Carman’s Country Kitchen to make way for a penis, er, pizza place?

Tucked inside a sentimental goodbye by Lauren McCutcheon in the Daily News is a nugget of what may come to be after brunch standby Carman’s Country Kitchen closes at the end of the year.

What does “run of the mill pizza place” actually mean? Photo via Daily News

After McCutcheon deftly uses about 2,000 euphemisms describing owner Carmen Luntzel’s prodigious penis collection – does she have penis envy? – she writes:

After 22 years at 11th and Wharton, the self-made chef and self-proclaimed “keeper of the penises” is closing shop and moving to South Carolina.¬†At summer’s end, Luntzel’s landlord sent notice he wasn’t renewing her lease. The property owner wants to turn her one-of-a-kind South Philly spot into a run-of-the-mill pizza shop.

We’ve been trying to get info about that pizza place for about a week, so thanks a lot for blowing up our spot, McCutcheon! Kidding. But has anyone heard anything about the pizza place-to-be?

This place is way overpriced and not that great to begin with.

Totally agree about the prices, but the food was good and the charm and character of the place was excellent. I would have went there more than twice in its existence if it wasn’t $45 for two people to eat pancakes, an omelette, a coffee, and an OJ, though.

I guess I won’t really miss this place since I haven’t gone back in so long. On the other hand, I’d rather look at an overpriced brunch spot than a “run of the mill” pizza shop.

Agreed. But I would honestly patron an average pizza place 10x more than this place. Considering the nearby businesses, whoever opens this would be wise to shoot a little higher than “average” though.

Brunch for $20 per person is not a bad deal.
    Yous’re just cheapskates.

If you never ate in the bed of the pickup truck, you missed out.

    Sad to see Carmen go.

She should have closed years go. The place was filthy, the service rude and the food mediocre at best. The reason she only took cash is because she doesn’t have a bank account and hasn’t filed taxes in years. She lost her lease because she pissed off too many people.
