UPDATE: This post has been updated, again, from an earlier version.
If you have walked down 13th Street, just south of McKean, in the past few months, you may have noticed the zoning sign posted on the old 13th Street Medical Centre at 2022 S 13th Street. The building is currently empty and collecting litter.
We spoke to the church located next door at 2026 S. 13th Street, IFGF Church, who stated the building previously belonged to their organization. However, they were unable to get a permit for construction, so they decided to sell it in 2010.
City records say the St. George Orthodox church bought it in December 2010 for $200,000. They applied for a zoning variance to change the use to “administrative office for a religious organization to include meeting rooms, after-school programs, tutoring, social services and bible study.”
They were granted the permit in December by the ZBA over the objections of the EPX Civic. One possible twist is that Zillow says the building has been approved for short sale, though we couldn’t immediately confirm that. The building is approximately 4,800 square feet and there’s no sale price listed.
Here’s a link to a Philly Speaks thread about it for some history. Neighbors objected because they believed St. George’s Coptic Church down the street wanted to open some sort of mission there. But after the ZBA ruled, a source at the EPX Civic said they’ve since reached out to the church and welcomed them to the neighborhood
Meanwhile, if you look closely at the windows on the second floor, you can see the sky. The second floor facade is… a facade. Nothing is behind it. Weird, huh?
Anyway, if you know more about this property, feel free to update us or comment below.
And on a completely unrelated note, we spotted this unfortunate — graffiti? is that what you’d call it? — just down the street a while back, and never did anything with the picture. Maybe it’s commentary on the current state of the medical facility.
