The Dolphin Tavern is scheduled to open on March 20, new owner Avram Hornik has announced. Eater broke the news this morning, though we’d like to think our heads-up this week about the sign work had something to do with that.
Eater says Hornik has partnered with “head bartender/South Philly stud Matt Summers (The POPE, Kraftwork).” The plan is still to have dancers, as we speculated when we broke the news about this way back in December. There won’t be food at first.
But we’ve also learned that it appears that Dave P from Making Time will be booking the DJs, which is an interesting twist. A source close to the man told us he’d be involved, and Dave P posted a picture of the Dolphin sign yesterday on his Facebook page: “Illuminating broad st. see you march 20th ! #thedolphin @ Dolphin Tavern.” That’s half-confirmation in the Internet age.
We lamented last week that with the sale of Teri’s on 9th Street, it could mean the demise of one of the only late-night dance spots in South Philly. But Eater says a “massive sound system” is being installed and the pool tables are getting nixed, so that seems to us to portend some sweaty moves in the back half of the bar.
