St. John’s church demolition looks apocalyptic

Demolition of St. John’s Episcopal at Reed and Moyamensing has begun, sending a cloud of dust onto that section of Pennsport. Thanks to photographer Tug Haines for sending us these pictures:

Otherworldly, no?

The church is being demolished to make way for 12 townhouses.

At least all the history isn’t being erased from the neighborhood. Sacred Heart School across the street was sold to Christopher Columbus charter, so that structure will live on.

The demolition guys said there was so much dust because the mortar between the stones turned to grit and dust when demolished. RIP 1830 – 2013
