What's Happening in:  Pennsport

Know this bad pet owner? Report him to 3-1-1

OK, this is gross. So if you don’t feel like gagging, don’t watch the video. But if you live in Pennsport, you may be able to stop this jerk from leaving his dog’s shit all over the neighborhood.

You may remember that back in April, we told you we wanted to start a dog-shit crusade. The idea was prompted after an admirable resident of the 1600 block of S. 12th Street posted a sign at the parking lot behind El Zarape telling all the bad pet owners to clean up after their pets. That post was one of the most well-read we’ve ever had, signaling what a big issue this is to South Philadelphians.

We also told you in that post that if you had video of a violator, we’d post it online. So here ya go, at Front and Sigel streets.

Now, remember, folks, this is not a call for vigilante justice. Do not do anything stupid like slash the guy’s tires or throw a brick through his window. But if you know where he lives, you can call 3-1-1 to report him. Keep the ticket number to track the problem. The city will send a warning letter to his house, and for a second offense, he’ll be fined.

This has worked for us in the past when a particularly bad neighbor of Passyunk Post world headquarters let his dog wander around without a leash. Called 3-1-1, letter got sent, and no more poop problem.

We’ll conquer this problem yet.

Special thanks to the tipster who sent us this video. Have any other, nonpoop-related tips? Email us at and we’ll check it out.

This is great. Now can we do something about the bread litterers that make it hazardous to walk dogs in the neighborhood too? And the chicken bone droppers, and the corn cob discarders, and let us never forget the cheesesteak abandoners.

    From a responsible dog owner.

srsly? this is the worst problem on someone’s block? do I live in the same city or neighborhood?

how about bicycles on the sidewalk, women being assaulted, demo and construction being done in the middle of the night with no paperwork, homes being sub-divided and rented without occupancy permits, inspections, or zoning, abuse of handicapped or loading zone parking spots, people cooking and selling food on the sidewalks with no sanitary facilities or paperwork, abandoned properties, people from nearby drinkeries hanging out drunk on your stoop or using your sidewalk to relieve themselves, and a million other types of disgusting litter.

Of course those other issues are also problems, gurl. But are you suggesting the dog bombs everywhere are not a problem?

I didn’t say this is the worst problem on the block. This is just the one that got caught on the camera after the 3rd or 4th time it happened. I make no apologies. If you don’t have problem with shit on the street, steps or your sidewalk post your address. Maybe you can plant a seed in it and we can have nice beautiful flowers growing on the sidewalk. Wouldn’t that be great.

It is classic how he looks both ways to make sure no one is coming. A clear indication that he is aware that he should be cleaning up after his own pet so that no one else has to do the disgusting task.

Really?… This is the way you choose to go about this? As a pet owner who cleans up after their dog 99.9 percent of the time I find this completely childish, not to mention worse than the act of not picking up poop.

Whoever thought this was a good idea needs a lot of growing up to do.

There are an innumerable amount of ways to go about urging people to clean up after their dogs. Putting up offensive signs or calling out people via surveillance cameras is anti-thetical to (or at least what I’ve gathered from viewing it) the aim of this website… that being… building a sense of community pride as well as identifying the “happenings” in the neighborhood.

Take after the South Philly Stadium District and put up some dog stations equipped with bags and small trash cans.. or given that this is “becoming” such an issue maybe you should just call for all the yuppies to move back to No Libs.

So, Dogowner, does that mean that occasionally you don’t pick up after your dog? Multiply that by the thousands of dogs in South Philly and that adds up to a lot of putrid piles. I don’t mean to be snarky, but it was my idea to post the video and I stand by it.

Hell, we have to do something, and fostering community can only go so far. Maybe the fear of getting caught will mean that the .1 percent never occurs. Having pride in your community means treating it with respect and you don’t show respect with a big pile of dog shit.

I love the idea of what they do in the Stadium District, but they get money from the stadiums themselves to fund programs. And then there has to be people who are willing to clean them out and stock them with bags. I think I just struck a nerve with you because you know deep down that it is never OK to leave your dog’s mess.

Why is it my responsibility to urge people? Why should I have to put up signs, provide bags, etc. etc. for you to clean up the 0.1% of the time you don’t. That sounds ridiculous.

I’m responsible for my sidewalk and have cleaned up trash on the entire block, planted flowers, etc. and every week I have to clean up dog poo. There are many cameras, originally bought other reasons and just so happen the only crime caught was a guy not cleaning up after a dog. Yes its a crime that results in a fine.

It’s ridiculous how you think its everyone elses responsibility to provide everything possible for the dog owner to clean up his dogs poop. Sounds like you are childish and lack the ability to take personal responsibility.

PS, local news stations are going to run this story and this website and topic is building steam.
