What's Happening in:  East Passyunk Crossing

What’s that addition outside The Dolphin?

A new box clad in white siding has been built on the sidewalk outside the Dolphin at 1539 S. Broad St.

The pics come from a faithful reader. Thanks!

The structure means going through two doors to get inside, so we assume it was built to keep the noise level down as patrons go in and out of the place all night long.

We put in a call to the folks at Four Corners management to find out what the deal is with that thing, and we’ll let you know if we hear something different.

Looks like there’s still plenty of room on the sidewalk

Meanwhile, we didn’t find any permits for this thing. Maybe we missed ‘em.

The South Broad Neighborhood Association doesn’t see any either, and they sure don’t like it. Here’s what they had to say on their Facebook page:

The Dolphin Tavern has a new addition. Besides being dog ugly, it was built without zoning and permits.
If you care about how our neighborhood looks, call them and tell them what an eye sore they have created.

That thing is terribly ugly! sure hope it’s temporary.

I noticed it on my walk to work on Monday. As of today, Wednesday, the Dolphin sign has been moved to the front of the new structure, so I’m guessing it’s permanent? I don’t think they would bother moving the black letter sign unless they planned to keep it up.
It makes the place look creepier then it did, and that is saying something.

Ugh.. I thought it couldn’t get worse. Seriously, the re-do of the Dolphin is a wreck. Who pays a cover charge for a “dance party” where some d-bag spins records and beer costs twice as much??

Well, it’s not like that block of South Broad is winning any beauty contests, with or without the addition. If it cuts down on late-night noise, I’m sure at least the closest neighbors will come to love it.
