What's Happening in:  Whitman

SouthBowl is rising out of the ground on Oregon Ave.

Finally, we’re getting some visual confirmation that the planned bowling alley/arcade/batting cage project on Oregon Avenue is actually happening.

South Bowl

An eagle-eyed reader told us last week that some steel spires were jutting out of the ground at  19 E. Oregon Ave., which we told you in February was going to be the southern counterpart of NorthBowl in Northern Liberties.

We dubbed it SouthBowl, which was apparently premature because they haven’t settled on a name. But wouldn’t it be kind of stupid to name it anything else?

Anyway, the zoning application said it would be a bar/restaurant/bowling/entertainment complex. Word was that it would also include arcade games, pool tables and outdoor batting cages.

Months ago, a spokeswoman told us they were planning to open this fall. Obviously, that ain’t happenin’. Now we hear that this should be opening early next year.

Last time we wrote about this project, there was a lively discussion about its location. And even some commenters suggested that the Northern Liberties version would still be easier to get to. What do you think? How often do you see yourself going to Front and Oregon?

How often do I see myself going to Front & Oregon? A hell of a lot more often than I can see myself going to northern liberties.

It’s about time we got something easy for South Philly to get to that brings back some of the “old days” fun!!!! There are tons of things on Front and Oregon that people go to all the time, so the location is very familiar! As long as there is plenty of parking, we are good!
