‘Upscale comfort stoner food’ coming to 19th and Ritner

A new owner at the Tap Room On 19th, at 19th and Ritner streets, told the Insider that he plans on bringing  “upscale comfort stoner food” to a reboot of the neighborhood bar.

Make way for lines of stoners, neighbors

Michael Strauss, a commercial real estate broker who is buying the bar along with musician Pete Fry, said they will close the bar after they settle on the property at the end of the month and reopen quickly with 13 beers on tap.

They plan to keep the name for now, says the blog.

The chef will be Jennifer Choplin, who ran the kitchen at SoWe at 22nd and Carpenter. A change of mood is also on tap, says Insider:

They’ll go for a dark, candlelit atmosphere with music from a play list, not the current jukebox.

Has anyone been to the current bar? What’s it like?

I’ve been there a few times. It’s a step up from your “neighborhood” bar. It’s not a place that I would ever go out of my way for.

The current bar was OK. It was a good place to watch a game. Lately the bar has been neglected and has become really gross. I am glad to hear that the new owners will revamp the place.

Also, it will be really nice to have a different name for this bar. Tap Room on 19th was pretty similar to the South Philly Tap Room a few blocks north.

The current bar is a bit weird, never full and always a confused mix of pickled 60 year olds reliving the best of disco makeup and 20 something south philly spray tan chicks. Food and beer list is ok but nothing destination worthy. We suggest bringing back the pool table.

We did not go there very much, but they had the best lump-crab fries in the city! Great filet mignon sammy and really good wings. Gonna miss the old place! Will try the new tho. Bernadette was our favorite bartender.
