What's Happening in:  Passyunk Square

El Zarape gets neighbor OK for move to 1304 S. 9th St.

The Passyunk Square Civic approved a new location for El Zarape at its zoning meeting last week, clearing the way for the Mexican BYO to spruce up 1304 S. 9th St., which looks like an old garage but is actually a Metro PCS store.

It'll get much more inviting.

It’ll get much more inviting.

Of course that means El Zarape will be moving out of its prime corner spot at 12th and Passyunk. The new space, which includes the cell phone shop’s storefront on 1305 E. Passyunk Ave., is at the heart of cheesesteak central, a couple doors down from Pat’s.

Tina Geary of the PSCA’s zoning committee said El Zarape plans to¬†replace the security door on 9th “with some storefront glass, which should improve that facade.” Kind of like the Garage bar half a block away.

Out with the old

Out with the old

This will be the back of the new place, where the kitchen is.

This is 1305 E. Passyunk, the back of the new place, where the kitchen will be.

There will be room for about 30 seats and they plan to be open seven days a week until 11 p.m. most nights.

At the same meeting, incidentally, the planned coffee/dessert place at 12th and Ellsworth also was approved by the committee.

How about the current Zarape building? Any word on what may go in there? Hopefully something a little nicer.

Not yet. I don’t think they plan to move out for several months, so I’d be surprised if we know what’s going there before April or May.

So, the entrance and dining room will be on 9th and the kitchen will be on Passyunk? Seems backwards. What’s the rationale?

my guess is because it costs less to renovate based on where the current infrastructure is, but it’s too bad because facing EPA would mean facing Passyunk Gardens which is a nicer view!

Is there any timeline on the coffee shop at 12th and Ellsworth?

Nothing official but I’m sure that will be several months away. My guess would be May 1.
