The theater, based at 13th and Reed, is actually moving to the larger Plays & Players Theatre near Rittenhouse Square for this production, which is directed by Exile Associate Artistic Director Matt Pfeiffer. Performances run Jan. 30 to Feb. 23.
In True West, two brothers who have taken opposite paths in life — Austin, a screenwriter played by Jeb Kreager, and Lee, a drifter played by Brian Osborne — reunite in the suburbs of Southern California when Austin is housesitting for their mother (E. Ashley Izard). The brothers’ jealousy toward each other is heightened when Saul (Joe Canuso), a Hollywood producer, enters the scene. Fighting for identity and determined to expose each other as frauds, the brothers collide in a sometimes-terrifying, darkly comic struggle for dominance where the powder keg between them threatens to explode at any moment.
