Check out PPD’s new crime-mapping tool – and remember to not leave valuables in your car

The Police Department has unveiled a new crime-mapping tool that is both neat to play with and kind of frightening at the same time.

Screen grab of the new crime map tool shows crimes in the past week. That's a string of car robberies along Mifflin.

The image above maps crimes reported in the past seven days, showing a recent rash of car thefts, for instance, along Mifflin Street.

You can find the tool here.

Thanks to Technically Philly for alerting us to this one. In their story you can find a little bit of background about the guy who created the tool and how it plays into a push by the city to work with “civic hackers” to have them see what they can do with open data.

It’s interesting but no street names on the map makes it hard to use.

Allison – there are street names, but you have to zoom in to see them.

I can’t drag the map window down to make it bigger. Wish I could full-screen the map. It’s a little irritating.

There is a square made up of three little blue lines right below the map in the center. Click on that, and the map should expand to full screen.
