A civic hacker put together an interactive map of the change in violent crime all over the city between 2012 and 2013, and most of South Philly improved. But not all.
Click on the image to be brought to the map, which was reported by Newsworks. It breaks down the change in violent crime rates by census tract, so what may appear to be one large block of blue (a good color) could actually be several different areas with vastly different rates.
In this case, orange and yellow are not good – bad news for that sliver of Newbold/Point Breeze – but it’s important to note that some neighborhoods that may have experienced an increase did so from a very low point, or vice versa regarding decreases.
Bottom line, it takes playing around with the map to see what it really means. But does this map add up to how you have felt, safety-wise, the past couple years?

We still have those fiends walking around on Broad Street trying to score more drugs… Violent crime? No… But they are pretty offensive to look at… Why we would allow halfway homes and methadone clinics so close to our main street, in South Philly, the best part of town… I have no clue… Plenty of space in southwest to store our junkies…
