First Pics: Volta Market opens with natural soaps and home products at 1439 E. Passyunk Ave

Another corner of Passyunk and Dickinson has been revived with the opening of Volta Market, which offers handmade soaps, natural household cleaning products and organic packaged goods like chocolate, mustards and snacks.

Volta1

Owner Lisa Volta opened her namesake shop last week — at 1439 E. Passyunk Ave., across from the POPE and B2 — about four years after launching her homemade soap line, Volta Organics. If the brand sounds familiar, she had already been selling at Nice Things Handmade and other shops around town, as well as online.

Volta makes a wide range of bath and body products, such as an all-in-one Ginger Grapefruit hair, face and body bar, customized mixes of bath salts, teatree lemongrass deodorant, a Dead Sea facial mask and many more. For men, Volta also has been selling A Man Kit (For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow), which includes aftershave, mustache wax and beard softener.

The market’s other offerings include what Volta called “like-minded products” such as other soaps made using essential oils, like Dr. Bronners and Deep Steep. There is a modest selection of baby products, including powders and sunscreen. Also look for allergen-free snacks and soy-free chocolate, plus coffee, mustard, jams, olive oil, cocktail mixers, loose teas, whole herbs, natural remedies and other items.

These are the cocktail mixers, essentially concentrated spiced teas.

At the back, there is a card catalog of soap where customers can buy in bulk, saving a little money from the pretty packaged versions on the shelves.

Volta has invited holistic professionals to start offering workshops next month, including an ayurvedic yoga instructor. Starting in June, hopefully, she will hold her own sessions on making soap and mixing cocktails. Also on the agenda, Volta has applied for a license to offer takeout tea (no coffee, though, since there’s enough of that around).

For the full lineup of bath products, check out Volta Organics’ website here. Volta Market’s website is here but still under development.

Hours to start are Tuesday to Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Mondays. Volta plans a grand opening reception at the next Second Saturday, May 10, so keep your eye their Facebook page for an update on that event.

Joey, do you mean the building on 12th and Watkins? If so, it’s a residential property. I don’t know if the residents own the house or rent, but they’ve been living there a while.
