New citywide 10-K race will begin and end on East Passyunk

UPDATE: This race sold out in 70 minutes. Guess running through this hood is popular, huh?

The local shoe-store chain Philadelphia Runner has announced that it will hold a 10-K race in September that will start steps from the fountain and end with an East Passyunk street festival.

Up to 3,000 runners will wind through a dozen city neighbors on  Sept. 6 for the Philly 10-K, which eschewed the typical Fairmount Park course in favor of a more urban track. Reports the Philadelphia Business Journal:

“This is the first race we can think of that is really self-contained in the core of the city,” said Bryan Mahon, co-owner of Philadelphia Runner, which has two stores in the city and a third in Chadds Ford, Pa. “There are a lot of great races in Philly but we wanted to add something that was different than what was already out there.”

Registration will open 10 a.m. on May 12 on the Philly 10-K website. Added bonus: After the race each runner will get a free beer that’s made specifically for the event by the Philadelphia Brewing Company and a Shake Shack custard made with Termini Brothers cannoli.

Every runner needs a good shot of calories post-race, right?

If it is called a citywide 10-K, they should provide Beam and PBR at the end of the race.

But in all seriousness, I like that someone has proposed a race that doesn’t involve the loop, or any of its constituent parts through the park.

Our local races are pretty skewed towards being up in the park. Urban races through the city core are very interesting and much easier to watch (think Broad Street) or the portions of the marathon that go through the city.

This race is a nice distance for less hardcore runners and begins and ends in a really nice and accessible area.
