Closed: Bahn Mi shop Cafe Nhu Y. Where do we go now?
UPDATE: The cafe has resurfaced in a bigger location a few blocks away under a new name, Lee’s Cafe and Bistro at 522 Washington Ave.
This is kind of a tough one. Mom and pop bahn mi (Vietnamese hoagie) shop Cafe Nhu Y at 802 Christian St. has closed, again throwing us on the search for a substitute.
The for-rent sign is a pretty good indication that they are no more. So is the disconnected phone number. Now where should we go to satisfy those cravings?
Cafe Nhu Y became our go-to hole in the wall after O Sandwiches shut down next to Geno’s a couple years back. That spot became Underdogs for about six months and is now Zoey’s Yogurt Bar.
Bad time for closings. Torero tapas bar in the Italian Market also just shut down, we reported last week.
Thankfully, numerous commenters on other posts are mentioning that they’re reopening between 5th and 6th on Washington Ave. If you want a banh mi on a traditional French baguette, I’d recommend Artisan Boulanger’s, which are pretty banging.
The best banh mi AND cafe sua da in the city is at Vinh Long, 7th & Moyamensing.
Ba Le at 6th and Washington! Artisan Boulanger is good too, but oh man, Ba Le!

8th n washington cafe huong lan is where it’s at. all day everyday. their banh mi tastes almost the same as nhu y.
Yes! I have spoken to the owner, they will be reopening at the end of May at 522 Washington Ave, very excited for them, I have been a dedicated number 8 no mayo for quite some time. I’m not sure what type of space could go in there, it is VERY small. Perhaps a very very small bodega?
I live right around the corner from this location and I have to say that the area is changing alot. Within the 3 years I’ve lived here, most of the brownstones around me have been demolished and replaced with new developments. Rent is getting higher while our views are getting ruined. We’re all moving to pennsport or point breeze. It’s sad, the culture in the market is dying, and thats what most of us were attracted to in the first place.
Nam Son in the 16th and Washington Plaza. Best Banh mi’s. and if you like Tofu, their tofu banh mi is slammin’!
