Construction about to begin on Armory’s replacement at 1221 S. Broad St.

A permit has been granted for the first step in construction of the 50-unit apartment building coming to 1221 S. Broad St., the former site of the Broad Street Armory.

The Armory building was demolished in the fall, and a backhoe has been sitting in the hole for months. Now that the weather has cleared up, construction can get going. The permit allows the foundation to be laid for “a proposed six-story mixed use building,” according to city records.

Other building permits will still need to be granted, but this does signal that work is imminent.

The building, designed by Landmark Architects and developed by Michael Carosella, is supposed to include 50 apartments and a ground-floor commercial space of about 1,000 square feet. We reached out to Landmark’s Vince Mancini to see about getting an updated rendering but haven’t heard back just yet.

Meanwhile, Torre Big and Tall next door is closing, which could mean even more action for that stretch of Broad Street. Now if we can just get that vacant corner filled at Dickinson Street, we’re really in business.
