Bottle Shop moving two blocks up to Chartreuse, which is closing

A liquor license application has popped up in the window of the Chartreuse flower shop at 1616 E. Passyunk Ave., and it doesn’t mean orchid-garnished martinis (which we saw at a wedding once).

The Bottle Shop, holding down the fort at 1837 E. Passyunk Ave. since 2010, will be moving into the space, hopefully by the end of the summer, said co-owner Gena Montebello.

Montebello said that they decided to put down real roots in the neighborhood and bought the new building, which has about the same amount of retail space as the original location. The new one is narrower but deeper.

Expect pretty much the same as what’s now on offer: a row of beer coolers plus a handful of tables, a couple of beers on draft and a few snacks for sale. And maybe a big crowd for a Sunday night show, a la “Breaking Bad” viewing parties?

We heard that Chartreuse, which moved to that location in 2010, was closing because the owner had decided to retire. Speaking of closings, so is Frankie’s, the women’s clothing shop across the street.

The space does feel pretty narrow, but I’m sure they’ll make it comfortable. May limit the stroller-ability of popping in with a little one, or when folks go in w/pups. Also curious how that part of the avenue will accommodate folks taking smoke breaks outside at that location.

Ahh, but my walk was just shortened. So, it all evens out.

The designated smoking area is the low wall at the parking lot and the bench near Mr. Martino’s.
