Work has started on Chhaya’s new location, two doors down

Coffee and waffle favorite Chhaya has begun construction on its bigger, badder location just a couple doors away, which we told you about back in February.

The current home
The current home at 1823 E. Passyunk Ave.
... and the future one.
… and the future one two doors north.

Owner V Beuria said she doesn’t have a firm opening date yet, but we’ll keep you posted. The new digs — the former Sweet Alyssa kids shop, which moved across the street — are at least double the space.

“I wish that we could have somehow magically made our existing space bigger, but unfortunately those kinds of miracles don’t happen,” Beuria said in an email. “I am very excited about the new space and the opportunity to make more people part of our chhaya family!”

To clarify a couple things that were in our previous post from February, which said that the menu would be expanding: Beuria told us this month that she is considering expanding the menu but that would be an eventual decision. Settling into the new home and continuing to turn out the existing tasty treats will be the focus.

“A lot of customers have expressed trepidation about everything being different. I am committed to maintaining all of the things that people really love about chhaya,” she said.

Also, an employee at the cafe told us that they had planned to open by May. Obviously, that wasn’t the case. Next month is much more likely.

We’re looking forward to it.
