Starbucks is coming to South Street west, which some people apparently want

A Starbucks is planned for the former home of the L2 cafe at 22nd and South streets.

That’s not something we would have expected people to be happy about, but, as Naked Philly said yesterday:

Plans are for a two-story coffee shop, which will represent the first Starbucks location on South Street West. This is certainly cause for celebration, because the current coffee options on the corridor stink on ice.

Now, don’t get us wrong. We’ve certainly been known to grab Starbucks from time to time, and we can’t exactly speak to the coffee options on South Street west. But is this cause for celebration?

How about all you G-Ho folks? Are you glad this is coming, or would you want to hold out hope for something else? What would you East Passyunkers think about a Starbucks plopping down at 12th and Morris, say in the Interior Concepts building that’s for sale?

Who in the world would we want a Starbucks when we have better local options — Chhaya, Brew, Black and Brew, B2, and Plenty.

There is a Starbucks and a Dunkin Donuts near SPHS for people who don’t like coffee.

Naked Philly was being sarcastic when they said that. They immediately follow with “If we may be serious for a moment”.

I do think people get too bent-out-of-shape over chain businesses, though I can understand where they’re coming from. Sure, we don’t want to see neighborhoods lose their uniqueness, but it’s not as if you can’t have both. Ultimately, businesses succeed or fail based on whether enough people support it.

Also, people should be happy to live in a neighborhood that’s cool enough to support so many coffee shops. If that building was for sale down here in the wasteland below Snyder, it would end up as either a nail salon or crappy bodega.

They definitely meant it in irony, since the same company that runs NakedPhilly also owns the OCF coffee shop at 18th + South, which is a perfectly decent spot. There’s also Ants Pants cafe at 22nd, and Ultimo and the new Gold Standard location if you can venture a few blocks south to Fitzwater/Catherine. I certainly don’t see the need for a Starbucks around there, but I’m sure they’ll do great business anyway. Sigh.

Can’t say I’m sad to see L2 go–even if the space is ultimately taken over by the Green Dragon. My one visit to L2 was so…strange…I don’t even know how to describe it. Had one drink and fled.
