Baum’s dance apparel shop, not a dance studio, moving into 1805 E. Passyunk Ave.

The tenant moving into the former longtime home of St. Jude’s religious shop has some history of its own to trumpet.

Baum’s Dancewear, which has been in business since 1887, is moving out of Center City and into 1805 E. Passyunk Ave., next to Stogie Joe’s.

“We are hoping to relocate in late 2014,” store owner Peter Cohen told us.

We were a bit off when we first reported on the new tenant in July, when we were told that it would be a dance studio. Not so, Cohen said.

“No dance studio, but a dance & theatrical supply business that has been in Center City for the last 75 years,” he said.

For more on the shop, check out their website here. The current location is still open for business.

I used to pass this on 11th street, when there wasn’t much on that stretch. I wonder what will take its place on 11th.

I think its good that a age-long business is moving in. I’m sure they’ve got a decent client base and they do internet commerce so thats healthy.

Though I do wish a dance studio would have moved in.

I am thrilled that they are moving to OUR avenue! There are only two places I know of to get quality dancewear for my girls and this was one of them. The problem I encountered and I’m sure many others as well was getting to their store. If you drive it is in town how/where do you park?? Our avenue has so many more options I think they will be a nice addition! And are you kidding…. Everywhere you look, South Philly is like Dance school on every other corner! Ok maybe not every but there are alot! And with the performing arts schools. I think this was a smart move.

Bummer. I thought this would be a dance studio for adults and was looking forward to it. Passyunk would be even greater if there was something fun (like salsa dancing lessons) for adults.
