First Pics: Square Pie opens at 6th and Catharine

Square Pie, the new pizzeria from the owners of Cochon, is now open in the former location of Blue Belly BBQ at 600 Catharine St.

After Blue Belly BBQ failed to take off in the neighborhood like they had hoped, owner Gene Giuffi and his wife made the decision to reconceptualize the space.

The new restaurant, which opened last Wednesday, is a small BYOB that offers eat-in or take-out since seating in the establishment is limited to just three tables and bar seating.

The menu consists of, you guessed it, square pizza pies that are Brooklyn-style Sicilian. Square Pie offers two sizes of pizza, a small which is 8″ by 8″, or a large which is 12″ by 12″. According to Giuffi, the most popular are the Pancetta with cured pork belly, roasted potato, leeks, mozzarella and cream and the Porchetta with roast pork, garlic, sautéed spinach, provolone and cream.

In addition to pizza, they also serve pastas and appetizers with dishes like Arancini and Ragu all Nonna.

Square Pie is decorated with a combination of illustrations taken from vintage food books and photographs scattered throughout. Giuffi’s 5-year-old son also added some personal touches with chalk illustrations on the chalkboard painted portions of the wall.

The Porchetta pizza is just as delicious as it looks.

Square Pie is open Tuesday through Saturday. Lunch hours are 12 p.m. through 2 p.m.; Dinner hours are 5 p.m. through 9 p.m. For more information on the restaurant, visit Square Pie’s website here.

I had the salciccia pizza (sausage, roasted peppers, onions, mozzarella, tomato sauce) from Square Pie on Friday night and it was delicious. I really hope that the hood checks this place out. This isn’t just one more pizza place in the neighborhood. The dough so good. They really need to stick around this time.
