SoPhilly Spotlight: Rocky Edition

Located at 2104 S. 12th St., this week’s SoPhilly Spotlight is a renovated 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home that also happens to have some connections to Philadelphia’s favorite underdog, Rocky Balboa.

In addition to the cool “Rocky” history, the home itself has gone through quite a renovation to become what it looks like today. Here’s a look at the home prior to the updates:

The discolored wallpaper and carpeting throughout is quite a frightening sight.

The ugly wallpaper and carpeting have since been removed for a more polished look throughout

Ok, now to the “Rocky” connection. In “Rocky,” it’s stated that Little Marie’s hangout is the Atomic Hoagie Shop. Well, the Atomic Hoagie Shop from the film happens to be located just across the street from this home. The location of the shop has been frequently mistaken over the years as being in Kensington in a building that resembles it, but actually, it’s located here in South Philly at the corner of 12th and Cantrell.

The block the home is located on was also shown in the scene where Rocky walks Little Marie home.

Today, the Atomic Hoagie Shop might be gone, but other cool things are moving into the neighborhood, like the Artisan Lofts that are coming to the old paintbrush factory location at 12th and Jackson.

According to the listing from Coldwell Banker:

Its a shame whoever buys it is going to have to deal with the overcrowding sure to occur after they jam an overabundance of renters in the new overambitious brush factory development.

    Eek, another sectional sofa!

It’s a nice house and the backyard is larger than average. The bedrooms look spacious too. The bathrooms, especially the one in the basement, seem to be in need of updating.

      Hey Constance,

I was just about to say the same thing! What is the obsession with oversized sectionals. There are some really slick sectionals out there that don’t take up nearly that kinda of room.

        Hiya Lee!

The biggest problem with sectionals is the lack of flexibility. Once it’s in position there is no other place to put it so no rearranging of furniture. Plus it doesn’t offer more seating as a sofa and loveseat or a sofa and two chairs. Most adults will sit on the ends so they get the arm. And few people will want to sit on that corner piece.

I guess they’re good for sleeping or if there are children in the house.
