What South Philly organization should get $500 from us?

moneySometimes, gambling pays off.

Developer Bart Blatstein acknowledged at a meeting in Hawthorne last week that he’d tried but ultimately failed to lure Wegman’s to his proposed 30 story, two-tower, 450,000 square foot project at Broad and Washington.

That means we’ve won a friendly $500 wager with HughE Dillon of PhillyChitChat, and one lucky South Philly organization will reap the rewards. You just have to tell us which one should get the money.

So, tell us in the comments, on Facebook, on Twitter or by email to punk@passyunkpost.com which group doing good works deserves a little influx of cash. The group must be a 501(c)3-registered nonprofit. We’ll tally the most popular suggestions and put them to a vote next week.

And because a lease has not actually been signed for the supermarket tenant, HughE has agreed to send $250 now and $250 once the grocery store is announced. That’s just in case that sliver of hope of Wegman’s changing their mind comes through.

    Theatre Exile.

Not only does Exile produce great work in South Philly and work with the students at Andrew Jackson School, and open its doors to local organizations who need a space, but it brings people down to South Philly who go to restaurants and buy stuff.

Definitely the South Philly Food Co-op! And next time you see Bart tell him that Wegman’s is for burbanites and that he should give a call to the SPFC real estate committee if he really wants a game changer.
