More legendary food options coming to The Navy Yard in the spring

It seems like every week that we’re talking about yet other exciting opening in The Navy Yard.

Hot on the heels of the opening of Marc Vetri’s Lo Spiedo in October,  Mercer Cafe will open a second location down the road at 15th and Kitty Hawk Ave. With ties to the legendary Taconelli’s pizza joint in Port Richmond, will visitors and employees get to enjoy a slice of one of those epic pies?

The short answer is yes. According to Michael Klein at The Insider, Tom and Dina Woltjen’s Mercer Cafe will serve “breakfast and lunch fare” as well as a grab and go market area. Eater hails the creamed chipped beef at Mercer’s among the “best” in the city, so there’s that.

Dina Woltjen is originally a Taconelli and the redesigned bank at 15th and Kitty Hawk Ave. will showcase the newly installed pizza ovens. Klein reports the pizza will be available for eat-in, take-out and even delivery.

There will also be an open dining room and seats at diner counter. Eater had reported that outdoor seating would be included in the plans. Here’s what Klein mentioned about that: “Large windows and doors will increase lighting throughout the interior, allowing the dining room to open to the outdoors.” Initial designs from Otto Architects show outdoor seating.

The tentative opening date is set for spring.

Great location right near Urban Outfitters. They have their own cafeteria though. So I hope their offerings are exciting enough to draw people away from the already super cool vibe they have going on already at Urban..
