Unsurprisingly, South Philly shines on the foobooz’s ’50 Best Bars’ list

We know it’s crazy to think, but the end of 2014 is right around the corner. As you know, the end of the year brings a bevvy of “Best of” lists.

While it’s not always certain who will take the top spot, if the list pertains to food or drink, it’s a pretty safe bet that South Philly will feature prominently on each and every one. This time around, it’s the “50 Best Bars in Philadelphia” from foobooz, and South Philly takes three of the top fives positions. How’d we do overall?

It doesn’t really matter that Pub & Kitchen in Rittenhouse took the top spot (okay, it does), what’s important is that South Philly took three of the top five spots. Two Point Breeze favorites, American Sardine Bar (#2) at 18th and Federal St. and South Philly Tap Room (#4) at 15th and Mifflin St. sandwiched The Industry (#3) located at Moyamensing Ave. and Reed St. in Pennsport to set the tone for the rest of the Top 50.

In all, South Philly took home 18 of the 50 spots on the list. We’re not really math people, but that’s a hefty 36%, and also slightly better than the 15 spots on the Zagat restaurant list, if you’re keeping score at home. The Good King Tavern in Bella Vista (#9), a newbie to the list of standouts, rounded out the Top 10.

The list was compiled by foobooz, who polled “25 of the city’s best chefs, bartenders, beer geeks, cork dorks and professional drinkers to weigh in on the best bars in Philly.”  The South Philly bars crushed the Top 30, taking home 13 spots near the top half.

You can view the full list here. However, we’ve compiled the list of South Philly establishments in the order in which they appear on the list:

  • American Sardine Bar (#2)
  • The Industry (#3)
  • South Philly Tap Room (#4)
  • The Good King Tavern (#9)
  • Devil’s Den (#15)
  • Brauhaus Schmitz (#16)
  • Southwark (#17)
  • Royal Tavern (#18)
  • Garage (#19)
  • Bob and Barbara’s (#23)
  • Grace Tavern (#24)
  • Boot & Saddle (#26)
  • Percy St. Barbecue (#28)
  • Townsend (#32)
  • Fountain Porter (#34)
  • Stateside (#42)
