Devoted ‘foodie’ to be buried with beloved John’s Roast Pork sandwich
Be it for their pork sandwiches, cheesesteaks or chicken cutlets, people simply love John’s Roast Pork located at the wonky intersection of Snyder and Weccacoe Ave. near Lowe’s.
Well, you’ve heard the saying, “If you love it some much, why don’t you marry it?”, right? Here’s a story that swaps marry for bury.
Michael Klein of The Insider reports that John “Butch” Gleason of Marlton, New Jersey had one final request of his family when he passed away: Put a sandwich from John’s Roast Pork in the casket.

“The day I die,” said his other son, John, “promise me you’ll put one of his sandwiches in my casket.”
[John’s Roast Pork Owner John] Bucci packed one up (yes, adding lots of sharp provolone and spinach), wrote “To Butch from John Jr. RIP” in Sharpie on the wrapper, and sent Matt Gleason on his way. Matt plans to freeze it till Saturday.
The funeral for Gleason, who was a longtime basketball coach, is Saturday.
In lighter (but semi-related) news, John’s Roast Pork will extend their hours starting in March 2015, something we’re sure Gleason would have been pleased to hear. Typically closed before 3 p.m. on weekdays, John’s will now serve their legendary fare from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., six days a week.
It begs the question: What South Philly food do you love enough to want to take it with you for all eternity?

When my wife was near her due date, she went in for her OB exam and was told that she was going to be induced. She called me at work and told me that the doctor told her to be at the hospital around 5:00 PM, but to eat before she came in since she would not be allowed to eat once the process began. I left my office and went right to John’s and ordered a roast pork sandwich and a cheesesteak. We met up at home, split the sandwiches, and then headed to the hospital a couple of hours later.
So John’s is the food of choice not only for those leaving this existence, but also for those about to enter it.
Been in South Philly for most all of 41 years and never ate anything from Johns, don’t like Roast pork .
They have everything else too…
