You may want to get the grits at Dante Espresso Bar Cafe

In a glowing review of Dante Espresso Bar Cafe, Phyllis Stein-Novack of the South Philly Review gave it a near legendary 3 and a half tips of the toque.

The review itself, which was taken during a recent visit for brunch, heaps high praise on the crunchy french toast crusted with Frosted Flakes, French omelette and, most notably, the “creamiest stone-ground grits I have ever tasted,” declared Stein-Novack.

Eater was so impressed with the review of Dante it proclaimed that E. Passyunk Ave. was “literally unstoppable” now that it is publicly know The Avenue kills the grits game. Here’s the word straight from Stein-Novack, who swapped out the usual roasted potatoes as a side to her omelette in favor of the grits. Let’s just say that she was pleased with her decision:

I received a medium-sized bowl filled with the creamiest stone-ground grits I have ever tasted since I first ate them 25 years ago on Shem Creek outside of Charleston, S.C. Since the grits revolution of several years ago, the majority of restaurants have nixed the instant version — not that there is anything wrong with them — and cooked the great stoned-ground. At Danté, they are mixed with a hint of cheddar cheese. These grits arrived in a hot bowl and should get an award.

Dante opened back in April at 1615 E. Passyunk Ave. and is nestled next to restaurant heavyweights like Laurel, Townsend and Paradiso at the former home of Metro Men’s, which moved down the street.

The grits weren’t the only dish that shined bright during brunch. Stein-Novack loved the crunchy french toast. She opted for Frosted Flakes, but you can also get it crusted with Cap’n Crunch and topped with mixed berries. The aforementioned French omelette, while possibly outdone by the grits, was also a hit:

“It was glistening and golden with not one hint of a brown spot. The eggs were whipped perfectly, hit the hot pan and folded over. It was topped with an almost lava-like cascade of semi-melted cheddar cheese. It was also piping hot.”

Basically, if you haven’t done so already, it looks like you have yet another spot to add to your list of places to definitely visit on E. Passyunk Ave. And look, they have new specialty lattes for you to try:

Dante Espresso Bar Cafe is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week and serves dinner Thursday through Saturday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
