Triangle Tavern reopening very soon

After being closed for more than six years, Triangle Tavern is slated for a comeback at 10th and Reed. That’s right, the tavern will finally reopen in five or six weeks.

Back in June we spotted some movement happening on the location, but since then there has been no real sign of what’s to come beyond a liquor license that popped up in 2013 registered to Dave Frank and Stephen and Geeta Simons, the owners of Cantina, Royal Tavern, the Khyber and several other restaurants.

Instead of simply opening a new restaurant or bar in the space, they’re bringing the Triangle back to life. The owners are leaving much of the character of the original establishment with the taproom staying mostly as-is. The majority of the renovations happening on the space have been on the kitchen. There will also now be outdoor seating for the spot.

More from Michael Klein of The Insider:

Why take on the Triangle? “I feel a certain kinship with the place – not because I used to go there but I feel like they were doing what we do,” Simons said. “They were a gastropub before the term existed. … Their food was delicious! They were a bar that had better food, better drinks, and better service than you would expect from a bar.” The idea, he said, is to “take that idea and carry it forward.”

Simons said the menu – from chef Mark McKinney, who’s half-Italian – will be reminiscent of the old days, which will be a relief to neighbors who buttonhole him outside, hankering for the mussels in red sauce, hot roast beef, and what he calls “the simple, cravable” food that represents “all the best parts of South Philadelphia fare.”

Are you excited to see Triangle Tavern brought back to life?

@ MIke, good grief, an article from 2008, from when it was owned by COMPLETELY DIFFERENT people. You are a lazy troll. In 2008 you were probably still attending Cherry Hill High…

        Well, that escalated quickly.

Well said AnthonyG! Completely different owners! Why do people always have to focus on the negatives. How about the fact that these owners are helping breath life into this neighborhood! Although… I’m sure we’ll get the same cranky neighbors complaining about how there will be no where to park.

I had one of the best nights of my life at the Triangle…years ago. There was an older fellow who would walk around singing and the crowd would join in…absolute hilarity. That was about 15 years ago. I’m looking forward to the new version of Triangle. Some good karma in that place (in spite of above referenced article)

I wonder if the plaque with the bar’s history that features the original oweners. (My grandparents, father and Uncle) If not I’d like to buy it from whomever has it.

In 2003 at The Triangle Tavern, I very casually asked my husband if he’d marry me. We got married the following October and we’ve been married ever since. It wasn’t the nicest bar at the time, but it will always have a place in my heart! Glad it is reopening.
