Chickie’s Italian Deli to close at 1014 Federal St.

After more than 21 years in business, Chickie’s Italian Deli is closing at 1014 Federal St. on April 11.

The shop, which considers itself the originator of the veggie hoagie, was listed for sale last year. Now that they found a buyer for the property, Chickie’s will be moving on from this location.

While it was previously stated that owner Henry George would relocate the sandwich shop to a bigger location, according to The Insider, there are no immediate plans to reopen Chickie’s elsewhere.

The original listing price of this property was $1 million, before being decreased to $750,000 in January 2014 and finally selling for $500,000 this year.

The reason for selling the property is due to George’s divorce.

There will be a new food business coming into this space, though we don’t have details on that just yet.

Are you sad to see Chickie’s close?

Very sad to see Chickie’s close. Their hoagies were an appetizer at my wedding! Best of luck to the owner opening a new location.

It’s always sad to see a neighborhood institution close. Their prices had gone up in the past few years, but that didn’t seem to deter their loyal customers (who liked to block Alder St while they picked up their sandwiches). I’m trying to think of what the neighborhood is missing – another sushi place might be nice. Do we need another Italian deli?

Where are you going to find another AUTHENTIC Italian place like WE were?? I say WE because I proudly spent the lasf /20 years of my life working in that place. My question to YOU is, do we REALLY need anothsr sushi bar in an Italian/Lebanese neighborhood where one place reigned shpreme?? Im going to deeply miss the place I’d come to call HOME in Chickie’s Deli. It pains my heart to have to say goodbye to my DEAR FRIENDS/FAMILY Henry, Hank, Miguel, Ozkar, and the ret of the staff and customers who have made this 21 year run such a hell of a ride !! I wosh you ALL nothijg but the best in the future!! JD

The color scheme and font style on their sign looked annoyingly like a wanna be Chickie’s and Pete’s… Which is weird because there is no comparison… They weren’t even a bar… It was just weird. Hopefully whatever opens up has some originality..?

Coming from someone who’s name is provwithout. Lmao are you even from Philly? And you’re 100% right there is no comparison Chickie’s food is a million times better than Chickie and Pete’s.

12th and Snyder buddy… I was born in South Philly. Thanks.

And I’m not saying which place is better. Though you took it that way… But the place undeniably looked like it changed its color scheme and signage over the years for some reason I can’t understand. Ok so the place was a world beater… But it was a world beater with an identity crisis.

That says enough. Anybody from South Philly KNOWS what kind of people are from 12th and Snyder. Go brush your tooth scumbag.

I’m gonna have to enjoy one more Fried Tomato Special with Turkey & Fresh Mozzarella before they close their doors. My go to deli in the area.

Sad to here about Chickies cloising I used to do work for the owners and they were very nice people. Their sandwiches were awesome. Hey Jeff D if you are representing Chichies may I suggest a milder tone, my Grandmother was from 12th and Snyder and she was a wonderful woman with all her teeth, thanks

I was going to say “what a shame, but seeing the attitude of Chickie’s staff in here… more like “good riddance.”
