Demolition finally set to begin on old King of Jeans building
Fencing has sprouted up around the old King of Jeans building, which — if you can believe it — we told you nearly three years ago that it would be torn down to make way for a new apartment building on the site.
That means demolition is about to get underway 1843 E. Passyunk Ave., and a new 59-foot, five-story building will rise in its place, according the the plans approved back in February 2014 by the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
The plans called for about 3,000 square feet of retail on the first floor, office space on the second floor and 12 apartments on the remaining three floors.
As you probably know, the sign was taken down about two months ago and placed on display at Provenance Salvage in Northern Liberties.
Meanwhile, we’re not certain what is planned for the ground floor commercial space here, but we’re still pulling for a state wine and spirits store (no, that’s just a hope, not even a rumor).
Or, like 12th & Morris, a big hole in the ground?
Actually, some heavy equipment just showed up at 12th and morris, so that’s getting going too
Work was being done yesterday at the site. So definitely starting.
Good news. Be interested to know if they secured a tenant for that space yet…..Let us know what you hear! Also, any news on who may be looking at Man’s Image space?
I heard a New York City style bagel shop wanted to move into the space. Any truth to that? I think that would be a solid addition to the avenue..

Yea, I heard it was NYC style. Imported straight from Brooklyn daily because Philly lacks that vital PH level in the water that NYC has.
Development is long overdue. I’m glad to see it is finally getting started. Have the neighborhood residents approved of what it going to replace it? Anybody have any ideas as to what would work in the commercial space on the street level?
And in typical Philadelphia fashion, with no consideration giving for redirecting the considerable pedestrian traffic on Passyunk and 13th near the building. They’ll have it fenced off for weeks while nothing happens and people wander out into traffic.
Weeks? You’re rather optimistic.
You’re right, months. Then it will finally get demo’d but the project will fall through. But the fence will be there for us, always.
The only good thing is the triangle island right there so people wont have to stray too far.
Hopefully demo moves along smoothly.
