Wayfinding signs being installed throughout East Passyunk

Have you noticed the wayfinding signs popping up lately around East Passyunk?

The new signs, which highlight everything from Cheesesteak Corner to St. Nicholas of Tolentine, are part of a new project that was made possible by the East Passyunk Business Improvement District’s CDC Tax Credit partnership with Samuels and Son Seafood.

A total of 89 signs will be popping up around East Passyunk over the span of the next 12 to 18 months. The directional wayfinding signs, like the ones pictured here, have begun being installed on existing poles throughout the neighborhood, while other will require poles to be mounted for installation.

In addition to the wayfinding signs, there will also be Disk Maps installed around the neighborhood to allow those new to the area to more easily orient themselves to their location. These maps will show significant landmarks in the area, in addition to a “You Are Here” star on the map.

Beyond the obvious East Passyunk Avenue placement of the signs, there will also be signs installed on the routes from all three subway stops, meaning Ellsworth-Federal, Tasker-Morris and Snyder, in addition to some signs being installed as far down as 9th Street up to Washington Avenue. There will eventually be signs installed in the subway stations, as well.

The wayfinding signs are meant to highlight attractions within a three-to-five block radius of the location. For example, the sign at Passyunk and Moore points out the locations of the Joey Giardello statue, the Broad Street subway line, East Passyunk Crossing’s Community Garden and more.

These signs will highlight a total of 35 attractions around the area.

So, I saw these during Flavors/Crafty Balboa while walking with a friend who’s from out of town. We were looking at the the signs around the Passyunk/12th/Morris intersection and felt them to be more confusing and contradictory than helpful…and why did there need to be three signs in one small area? I don’t mind the intention, but the execution seems poor.

Hi C.G. – these signs are meant to help folks who are unfamiliar with the Avenue get to and around the Avenue as easily and safely as possible. That intersection is such a challenge as we walked it through the eyes of a non-local, it required more signs to get folks through as safely as possible. You’ll see similar patterns around Reed Street when it’s finished – it’s a safety issue. When all of the signs are installed (there are still maps and more coming that required poles) we’ll walk the entire route again and make any needed adjustments. Thanks for your feedback.

It is the sorry excuse for building maintenance on the south face of the utility building at the northeast corner of 13th and Mifflin.

Nah, it’s the murals (rosary and furance, submarine, early 20th century South Philly) on either side of the municipal parking lot.

I believe it’s the accouterments to the giant PPA lot on prime East Passyunk real estate that will outlive us all?
