Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken opening a location at 20th and Washington

Washington Avenue has been seeing a lot of positive changes and plans for development recently, including a new Habitat for Humanity ReStore, a proposed mixed-use development at 24th and Washington and lots more.

Now Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken, the Memphis-based fried chicken chain, is even hoping to open a location here at 1930 Washington Ave.

Back in February, it was reported that Gus’s was expanding and considering Philly as a potential new location. In order to move forward, Gus’s will need to be granted a zoning variance for the spot to be rezoned for a restaurant. The location was most recently A&P Laminations.

More from PhillyMag:

On Monday, June 22nd, a presentation will be made before a neighbors association at 1444 Point Breeze Avenue. The zoning meeting itself is scheduled for Wednesday, July 1st. That stretch of Washington Avenue is currently zoned industrial and needs a variance for a restaurant. Gus’s is also looking to add a neon sign. If you live in the neighborhood, stop by the neighborhood meeting, though we doubt there will be any samples.

In case you’re not familiar with Gus’s, their fried chicken has been pretty highly regarded, even being called the best fried chicken dinner in the world by the Daily Meal. Gus’s started out as just one location in a small town east of Memphis, Tennessee and now, almost 60 years later, they’re continuing to expand.
