New plan being proposed for vacant Italian Market lot at 9th and Washington

Developers are planning to present a new mixed-use development proposal for the large and long-vacant lot at 9th and Washington at a meeting next week.

Details for the proposal are scarce, but the Passyunk Square Civic Association said on its website the development would be a mixed-use concept “including ground floor commercial, below grade parking, and residential.” That would be a big change from a previous plan that went nowhere.

Midwood Development had mocked up renderings of a one-story retail building with parking on the roof.

The old plan, no longer happening.

Zoning committee chair Jared Klein said he had no more information about the proposal, but he told us the developers will likely get into the nitty gritty at the information-only presentation.

PSCA’s zoning committee is scheduled to hear a presentation for the lot, between 9th and Darien streets next to Anastasi’s, on Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at Annunciation BVM Church Hall at 10th and Dickinson streets.

We’ll keep you posted.

Whoops! Aug. 11. I accidentally edited that out when I moved some things around. Thanks for keeping us on our toes.

The old plan is straight out of some suburban strip mall. I hate to say it’s worse than a vacant lot, but it is, and I’m glad it didn’t happen.

I agree! There should be at least a 6 story parking garage above that retail space. Then everyone would be able to drive to the market.

If you want parking move to the burbs. This is a city. Parking sucks in every city.
I really find it interesting that a blighted area is better than development. Granted, nothing should happen until their are occupants, but really. This blight is better than the crap shops already on that side of 9th.

I wonder when this committee was going to let the residents of the 1100 block of Darien st know that this whole project was about to commonsense? Do we not have a say in any of this?
