Growlers at 8th and Fitzwater to become La Casa de tu Madre Mexican restaurant

Growlers, the bar and restaurant located just down the street from the newly-opened Coeur, is currently undergoing a transformation .

Owner Jason Evenchik has closed Growlers at 8th and Fitzwater and begun revamping the spot into a Mexican restaurant and bar, to be called La Casa de tu Madre.

Evenchik, who also owns Garage on East Passyunk Avenue, will be giving the location a full transformation with a whole new menu and different decor.

For food, you can expect a lot of traditional Mexican fare like tacos, burritos, enchiladas, etc. The drink menu will of course include margaritas, along with sangria, “interesting” mixed drinks and draft beers from local breweries. Chef Michael Thomas will remain on-board, cooking up dishes inspired by his mom’s Ecuadorian background.

The decor of the restaurant will be undergoing a complete transformation, as well. They’re currently in the process of painting the space with a new color palette including blues and yellows. There will also be plenty of sugar skulls, paper mache decorations and more.

The entire transformation is expected to take just two weeks.

Hours will be Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 2 a.m.

I fully expect to see plenty of “I was at ‘la casa de tu madre’ last night!” jokes in the near future…

Why do people think they can just start cooking Mexican food? It’s not easy to do right, so it’ll just have the same bullshit.
