Escape The 1980s is an interactive game where 2-12 players figure out clues and codes to unlock doors and get through an 80s themed adventure. Artists, programmers and engineers built it to take participants through a retro mini-mall where they utilize old-school technology, interactive codes, and clues to escape the era of AquaNet.

With four themed rooms in each game, it’s the largest room escape game in the city. Players don’t need to know anything about the 80s to play. From hacking into an Commodore computer … to making calls on a push button phone … to playing Atari to solve a gigantic wall Twister board — the experience bridges art and tech in an innovative way.

“Room escapes need to move past paper clues and rinky dink codes and focus on the user’s whole experience,” says founder Elisabeth Garson, previously known for her work with The Philadelphia Arts Market. “I saw an opportunity to push thisconcept into something that brings art and technology together in a totally immersive and thrilling experience.”

Inspired by Sleep No More (New York City) and The PurgeII Room Escape (Deadhouse Designs), Garson spent two years studying the industry and wrote a UX-focused room escape game. In early 2015, she amassed a team of hackers, programmers, artists and UX testers and began her build.

Escape the 1980s is a pop-up venue on South Philly’s Passyunk Avenue that plans to stay through December 2015.

Meanwhile, they’re having a special event for Halloween. Anyone that comes in costume that day gets a free beer to drink during their game.
