Request a tree now for planting in the spring

Spring may be a little far off, but it’s not too early to be thinking about tree planting.

If you’re interested in requesting trees for your street, now’s your chance. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Plant One Million program’s deadline is approaching for street tree planting in the spring.

The purpose of this program is to replace the tree canopy in Philadelphia that has been lost due to the rapid development in the city. The addition of more trees will help improve air quality, absorb storm water runoff and help increase property values in the community.

In addition to requesting a tree for a specific location, there is always a need for more tree tenders. The East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association is hosting a final pruning training session for this year on November 7.

The deadline in Queen Village is November 20. You can find more information here. The deadline for Passyunk Square is November 23. More information is available here.

Its great that this is catching on. Two trees were just added a few weeks ago i the already open curb spots with soil. Hoping to get the rest of the block to get on board with it too.. The two trees in front of the old Maida Art Center next to the hair salon keep on dying though… I think they tried twice to get new trees for those spaces.. Gotta keep trying though.

My application a few years ago was denied – sidewalk is too narrow. Sure would love if my tiny street had some more greenery on it.
