News broke yesterday that Sam Sherman, the Executive Director for Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation, is stepping down in 2016.

In his five years in this position, Sherman and PARC have helped transform East Passyunk Avenue, bringing the street to become the go-to destination that it is today.

More from the press release:

“Sam has played a vital role in taking an organization that was on the verge of dissolution and transforming it into a major component of the continued revival of East Passyunk Avenue and the neighborhoods that surround it,” said Paul R. Levy, Chairman of the PARC Board. “His tireless efforts have made PARC a national model for how a non-profit community development corporation can support commercial corridor revitalization while using the proceeds from strategic real estate holdings and investments to fund cleaning, landscaping and other community benefits for surrounding residential areas.”

So what all does PARC do for East Passyunk Avenue? For one thing, they’ve had their hand in buying and renovating buildings to create the spaces that they are today. PARC has renovated numerous buildings, including the now-homes of Palladino’s, Fond, Brigantessa, Noord and others. Development projects from PARC also include the new community spaces at the Passyunk gateway and the Mifflin Street Triangle, the renovation of the area around the fountain, and much more. You can read a Q&A we did with Sherman in 2012 here.

Sherman will still retain his position at PARC through June 2016 to finish out some projects that are currently in the works. He will then begin a new position in Detroit, Michigan. The search for his replacement will begin in December.
