Vegan eatery set to open in Atlantic Pizza’s location across from Columbus Square

After 30 years located at 1401 S. 12th St., Atlantic Pizza is closing at the end of the month. This prime location across from the to-be-renovated Columbus Square won’t stay empty for long, though.

Atlantic Pizza

A new vegan eatery called The Tasty is set to open here in late-winter of 2016.

The owners of Atlantic Pizza, Ioannis and Vasiliki Haralambous, have decided to give up their restaurant to enjoy retirement. Atlantic Pizza’s location was put on the market in June for $100,000. That price included 1,958 sq. ft. of space, along with the existing fixtures in the kitchen, including things like a pizza oven, commercial mixer, commercial fryer and more.

It’s been a while.. We have been very busy working towards opening our new restaurant! We would like to invite you all…

The Tasty, the new tenant for the location, will be offering a menu of items made without animal products that will “please vegans and meat eaters alike.” Their menu will include things like french toast, waffles, tofu benedict and more for breakfast, along with a selection of sandwiches and salads for lunch and dinner. There will also be a selection of vegan baked goods (you can also place special orders), a rotating menu of specials and coffee from ReAnimator for you to enjoy in the eatery or on-the-go.

Sofia Baltopoulos and Kate Hiltz, the owners of the Philadelphia-based vegan pop-up bakery called This Charming Bakery, along with Ben Pierce, are behind this new venture. Both Baltopoulos and Pierce live in the neighborhood. They aim to create a friendly diner space that maintains much of the integrity of Atlantic Pizza, but with some improvements and added flair.

To celebrate the end of Atlantic Pizza’s 30 years, and the beginning of The Tasty, a party is being held on Sunday, November 29 at the restaurant at 1401 S. 12th St. The celebrations will be happening from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Tasty is expected to open in late-winter of 2016. Hours will be from 7 a.m. through 7 p.m. daily. You can keep up with The Tasty on Instagram.

I recommend a second set of eyes from a Marketing person on the name “The Tasty”.

Nothing tastier than vegan food. Doesn’t have that after-taste of tortured animal.

The name doesn’t really matter if they create a consistently exceed their customer’s expectations. Marketing will not get you very far if your product/service does not satisfy.

    Exciting!
Philly needs a place like this, like Champs in Brooklyn. I hope they keep the old school feel of Atlantic, have always liked the vibe here.

    And congrats on retiring!
