Artisan brewery to add to the influx of new businesses on West Passyunk Avenue

We’ve got some exciting news for the beer lovers of South Philly.

Brewery ARS, a “small family of artisan brewers,” is setting up shop at 1927-29 W. Passyunk Ave., in a former auto repair shop location.

The two men behind the project, Sean and Andrew Arsenault, began home brewing in their South Philadelphia home back in 2007. Since then, they’ve changed their career paths and raised over $30,000 through Kickstarter to make this brewery a reality.

According to their Kickstarter, the money raised will be enough for four 10-barrel fermentation tanks, which will lead to a number of unique brews. They plan to never filter, centrifuge or pasteurize their beers, and will only use whole flower hops.

What are we thankful for today? How about the keys to our very own brewery. West Passyunk here we come! #philadelphia #phillybeerscene #craftbeer #beer #beerporn #beerstagram #instabeer #saison #thanksgiving

Here are a few of their beers:

  • Starving Artist a very hop forward, bitter, & funky saison
  • Antique’n a single hopped Simcoe saison
  •  Simpleton a honey infused blond strong ale
  • Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout

From the look of the photos of the location, a lot of work will need to be done before the brewery is operational. The building is single-story and double-wide, with 1,485 sq. ft. of space.

The opening of this new business is a continuation of the up-swing that’s happening in West Passyunk. New businesses like Chaat and Chai, old business like Sit and Spin and others have been making the move to the west side of Broad Street, including the Gentile’s Fresh Produce market at 23rd Street. While the rumor about Nodding Head opening in the neighborhood turned out to be false, there’s plenty to be excited about with this new brewery.

We’ll give you updates as we learn more about the plans for Brewery ARS.

This is excellent news. It will really brighten and enliven that block of Passyunk. Hopefully some of the brews can be distributed at Pizza Pub which is a neighboring business down on the corner?

A coup of sorts that West Passyunk lands a brewery. I am very excited.
