Brew pub planned for Newbold? That’d be the second brewery for West Passyunk area

A neighbor tipped us off to some construction activity on the 1900 block of Bancroft Street in Newbold, and he says it looks a whole lot like a brewery is setting up shop in there. That’s two for this part of town we’ve heard about in one month.

He said the property was under construction and he “noticed large steel vats/barrels inside as well as what looked to be a bar.”

Brew pub brewing?
Brew pub brewing?

A search of the PLCB liquor license database doesn’t turn up a liquor license application yet, but the permits pulled on the construction say “1st floor sit-down restaurant, 2nd floor artisan industrial.”

Sounds a lot like a brew pub.

The 2,200 square foot property was bought in May for $250,000 by “West Broad Properties Fun,” according to city property records. The address listed is the same as the headquarters for LPMG, the development company owned by John Longacre, owner of South Philly Tap Room, American Sardine Bar, and Brew.

Longacre declined to comment on the project. The block lined with mechanics and what look like former two-story industrial buildings.

The building, 1939 S. Bancroft St., is essentially at 16th and McKean, a block above West Passyunk. So that makes two breweries coming to that section of town. It was only earlier this month when we told you about ARS Brewery, coming just around the corner to a former auto repair shop at 1927-29 W. Passyunk Ave.

Longacre was previously rumored to be involved with a second branch of the Nodding Head brewpub in Center City, which according to Reddit gossip was going to be located in the former Venice Plaza theater that Longacre is redeveloping at 17th and Snyder.

That turned out to be false, but now we know where that rumor might have come from, but whisper-down-the-lane style.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more details. In the meantime, keep those tips coming.

One of our loyal readers pointed out this construction work to us. Like that friendly neighborhood tipster, if you see something, say something – in an email to punk@passyunkpost.com.

I have sampled both Nodding Head and Brewery Ars, and I’m much more excited about the latter.

Great to see so much beer activity in the neighborhood!

Any Nodding Head you’ve had in the past year or so was made by PBC. It’s not the same as what was made at the brew pub.

A little more sleuthing. West Broad Properties Fund (Fun is just cut off) has a registered trademark for “monkey knife fight” registered to 1621 McKean St. And then there’s this:

I don’t think the license would show up on the PLCB license search, as those are only for bars. The new more relaxed brewery license allows for a strict brewpub as part of it.
