Hive76 ‘hackerspace’ announces move to Bok School

The Bok School is set to be transformed into an 8-story, 340,000 sq. ft. mixed-use facility with plenty of room for retail and makers spaces thanks to Lindsey Scannapieco and her company, Scout Ltd. One of the first of the businesses to join the ranks at Bok has officially announced their move into this massive former school.

Hive76, a shared “hackerspace” for makers and crafters, will be bringing their workspace to the facility.

This maker space operated out of a building on Spring Garden since 2009, but due to a fire in the building and other code violations, Hive76 had been seeking a new home since October. In an announcement on their website, they say that they’ve signed their lease for a space at Bok and will be having even more new projects, classes and events in this new facility.

Hive76 offers various levels of membership for the use of their space. Their facility has access to everything from drill-presses and vinyl cutters to 3d printers, computer workstations, electronics components and more. They work to promote science education with classes, skill-shares and other events to help educate the community and encourage more entrepreneurs and inventors. You can read more about what all Hive76 does on their website.

This is no doubt one of many announcements of businesses moving here. While the changes being made to Bok are far from completion, the success of things like their pop-up beer garden and rooftop yoga classes seem to be a sign of things to come for this facility. In the future, expect everything from changes to the exterior to create a “South Philly Stoop,” to anything from breweries to digital agencies opening in the space.

Hive76 didn’t commit any code violations. The violations cited by L&I were commited by the building’s owners.

Hive76 is a makerspace. Not just a hackerspace.

Cool! I went to an open house when they were up on Spring Garden, they were very nice. Glad to have them in South Philly.
