Spotted: Branches chopped off of tree on Tasker Street to steal bike

Thieves are really doing whatever it takes to get away with stealing bikes.

A member of the South Silly Facebook group posted this photo from the 700 block of Tasker Street where a tree’s branches were cut off to steal a bike.

The person who posted the photo states that a nice Fuji had been locked up to this tree periodically. When they arrived home last week, the tree was butchered and the bike was gone.

Thieves are going to some hefty measures these days. It’s usually encouraged that you lock your bike to stationary objects that it cannot simply be lifted over. In the case of the tree, that would normally hold true. If these sort of thieves are out there, it might be best to avoid locking your bike to trees altogether.

There’s no way to 100% prevent bike thefts if you’re locking up outside, but there are some methods that may be better than others to keep your bike safe. These guidelines from Bicycling magazine generally hold true for locking up in an urban setting, and we previously shared with you tips for getting your stolen bike back.

You are not supposed to lock your bike to trees. It’s bad for the tree, and it’s usually not the most secure for reasons like this. Having ridden my bike a lot over the years, it’s convenient to keep your bike locked up outside, but it’s better to bring it in if you don’t have a good place to do so.

Silly Hipsters. Be aware of your surroundings, Don’t leave valuables in your cars and don’t lock your bicycle to a tree or any object that can be altered to access your bike. City life…Welcome to it!

Definitely feel worse for the tree than for the idiot locking his bike on it.

I will never advocate locking a bike to a tree, which is illegal, however the lack of bike parking in most parts of Philly is less than optimal, to put it nicely.
