Three South Philly schools rank among best in the city
Last week the School District of Philadelphia announced the top-ranking schools in the city.
Among the recipients of praise were three South Philadelphia schools, Kirkbride elementary, Christopher Columbus charter and the Academy at Palumbo.
All three of these schools were ranked on the peer-leader list, meaning that these schools ranked higher compared to other educational institutions that teach to similar populations.

The peer and overall leaders were determined using the district’s “School Progress Report,” an internal measure. Rather than relying solely on test scores, the report counts academic progress, school climate, and other factors. District schools and 90 percent of charters – all those that opted in – were graded.
Still, Hite noted, there is much work to be done. Among the roughly 300 schools graded, a whopping 80 percent fall into the district’s two lowest achievement categories.
“The results also show that we must meet challenges at many schools,” the superintendent said. “We have a lot of work to do.”
While the praise for these schools is great, this report also shows where work needs to be done to improve education throughout the city.

this is a crock of you know what
Why is this a crock? My daughter attends one of the 3 listed and its well deserved bc the school is amazing! Proud parent to a CCCS student! They work so great with our kids! The teachers and staff r fair and show so much love to our kids! Academics are extremely challenging and they go above and beyond for all students
First I want to point out that Andrew Jackson, 12th and Federal, K-12 also scored a Peer Leader rating! GO JACKSON!
For the record, this is definitely a flawed process, but not a crock. These are all schools that have been working diligently to make attending a community based public school a viable and academically rewarding option.
But, for it to work, the neighborhood has to support the schools in any way possible. So, get to know your crossing guards, support the community events organized as fundraisers by Friends Of groups and the Home and School Associations for your neighborhood school.
Monday, MLK day of service, is a great chance to check with your neighborhood school to see if they need any help with projects.
