Helm to take over former 1st Ward Sandwich location at Front and Morris

1st Ward Sandwich closed up shop in January after less than a year in this location at Front and Morris. The closing of this sandwich shop left another Pennsport restaurant space empty, since Fourth and Cross had also closed around the same time.

Pennsport is now seeing some new food additions, first with the opening of The Wild Burrito, and now with the news of the successful American BYOB, Helm, coming to the former 1st Ward Sandwich location.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Helm is a successful contemporary American BYOB located in the Kensington area. They use locally-sourced ingredients for a menu that evolves seasonally.

More from Philly.com:

It will be smaller than Helm, which will remain open. Helm is a three-beller from The Inquirer’s Craig LaBan and was ranked 10th among Philadelphia Magazine’s 50 best restaurants in its most recent list,

Timeline is mid- to late-April, Griffiths said.

Unlike their location in Kensington, this South Philly restaurant will not accept reservations, mostly because of the size of the space. Expect to see a less formal approach to what Helm does in Northern Philadelphia.
