Will we ever get SEPTA Key? Release date gets pushed back again
April is almost here, so where is SEPTA Key? Our transit system’s step into the future has been delayed yet again.
As of December, SEPTA was still on track for an April rollout. So when will we see those Key kiosks in action? If all goes well at an upcoming meeting, we might be seeing the launch of Key in June.

In an exclusive interview, SEPTA’s chagrined general manager, Jeff Knueppel, said that a launch decision will be made April 15th, following a meeting with ACS Transport Solutions Group, the Xerox subsidiary overseeing implementation of the new payment technology (NPT). If the payment system gets the green light then, an official SEPTA Key launch would happen about six weeks later, in early June.
And if ACS and SEPTA don’t think the new system is ready after the April 15th meeting? Well, you’ve waited this long, right?
SEPTA officials had previously hoped to begin the NPT system’s launch in April. SEPTA Key’s arrival, now well over two years behind schedule, has been delayed by the project’s unexpected complexity and software bugs
Fingers crossed that Key will be launched by summertime.
I bet it will be pushed back again until after the Democratic convention.
I certainly hope so. We can’t possibly expect our own citizens to learn something new while a bunch of out-of-towners are visiting.
FTW! Tokens forever!
By the time this launches, SEPTA Key will be as outdated as tokens are today. All kidding aside, I understand being cautious, and I understand why this project is so complex. However, the project manager needs to figure out a better strategy for getting at least part of this system implemented and off the ground. Can’t delay a huge roll-out forever.
