The “little Jewish bakery” coming to East Passyunk Avenue has set an opening date.

Essen Bakery is coming to the former Belle Cakery location at 1437 E. Passyunk Ave., with a soft opening on Thursday, April 7.

The owner of Essen, Tova Du Plessis, will be bringing her selection of baked goods inspired by her upbringing in a Jewish home in South Africa to Passyunk Square. The menu includes house-made breads including challah and rye, babkas, rugelach and cakes. Each day Essen will also have two sandwich options. The bakery will be serving Elixir coffee.

Hours for the bakery will be from early morning to late afternoon, Wednesday through Sunday. You can stop by to pick up some goodies to-go, or sit-in for a cup of coffee and baked good.

EPX is a neighborhood abbreviation not a not profit organization. What organization’s info are you looking for?

There is a financial report at every single general membership meeting.

I have been to a number of general meetings and volunteered for some time in the civic association. Honestly, there are only two people in the whole EPXCA who seem to genuinely try to contribute to the neighborhood in a positive way: David and Lee. I don’t really see any good effort coming from the other members of the board.

PYunk, be careful about what you wish: some people are indeed moving out, us included. If things don’t change within EPX’s civic association, EPX will never raise above the second class neighborhood status it has today. We love Passyunk Avenue and support all its small businesses, but we also hate the low class mentality of many in this neighborhood. I regret to say that you are one of those. Try to open your mind and be welcoming to different opinions. It does not hurt.
