Snyder SEPTA station will be the first South Philly location to offer new Key cards in June
We’ve been anxiously awaiting SEPTA’s step into the future with a token-less system for years now. SEPTA Key was originally set to be unveiled in 2014, only to have the release date pushed back again and again. Now there’s finally an official date for the program to begin.
June 13 will mark the beginning of the SEPTA Key, but not everyone will be able to use it right away. This release date is meant specifically for “early adopters,” including 10,000 passengers who will be able to buy a weekly or monthly pass. If you want a pass in South Philly, you’re going to have to get it at the Snyder Avenue station on the Broad Street Line.
The program is being rolled out in a very limited manner to start. There are only six stations on the Broad Street Line and six stations on the Market Frankford Line where you will be able to buy these passes in the beginning.

Rich Burnfield, SEPTA’s deputy general manager, was unwilling to say how long before SEPTA would end the pilot and open SEPTA Key up to anyone.
“This is a big change for our customers,” said Burnfield. “We’re anxious to hear back from our customers as to the experience as to having the keycard.”
SEPTA will set up a special system for the Early Adopters to provide feedback.
I predict I’ll be buying plastic baggies full of tokens for a long time to come.
