Bill introduced to name new Marian Anderson baseball facility as the Ryan Howard Training Center
More than $2 million is being spent on a new addition to Marian Anderson Recreation Center for the Major League Baseball Youth Academy. Improvements to the center include new indoor batting cages, classroom space and more as part of a youth baseball development program.
Now that the facility is almost completed at 17th and Fitzwater, it’s time to give it an official name. From the beginning of the project, current Phillies player Ryan Howard has been a contributor. A bill is now being introduced to name the facility as the Ryan Howard Training Center.
Funding for this project has been a combined effort from the MLB, the Phillies, the Baseball Tomorrow Fund, the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Howard.
The bill for this renaming is currently still in council and was introduced on April 14.
This new 7,500 sq. ft. facility is expected to be completed by June 20. Once the center is completed, this Urban Youth Academy is expected to serve 8,000 area kids at the year-round facility.

Aren’t the blue portions of both walls representative of glazing? If so, this design is a great leap forward for the Philadelphia rec center typology. If not, then status quo terribleness.
Nope – as currently installed, they are some weird plastic/rubber looking paneling…
I wish they’d make the basketball courts around the city look better. A lot of these courts are in disrepair and have poor rims and backboards. The line’s on the courts, if there are any, are often inaccurate. And really, they need to be modernized. Collegiate 3 point lines have been moved back a few feet from the high school 3 point line for years now. Time to install some big boy (and girl) courts.
