New Cascia Center plans for Broad and Ellsworth include 10,000 sq. ft. of church space, 62 apartments
The new plans for the St. Rita of Cascia Center at Broad and Ellsworth are a huge change from the single-story facility originally planned as a “peacemaking” facility for the church.
There is now a seven-story facility planned, with 10,000 sq. ft. on the first and second floors dedicated to activities for the Cascia Center and 62 single-bedroom apartments planned for the upper stories.
The renderings are designed by Cecil Baker + Partners, with the developer being the Catholic Health Care Services. As you can see from the rendering, the new design has a much more modern look and incorporates many of the suggestions recommended when the plans were presented back in 2014.
According to PlanPhilly, at the SBSNA meeting, the attendees showed support for the project:
Early reactions from the dozen or so meeting attendees were unanimously supportive. Board member Jeff Goldman thanked the presenters for engaging neighbors early, and complemented the proposal, calling it “a vast improvement from the last presentation” and “much more thought-out than the one story shed.”
The project could take anywhere from two to four years to be completed. Catholic Health Care Services is not yet seeking a zoning variance for the site, as they hope to gather more feedback before proceeding with the application process.
I am wondering if those 62 apartments are just general rentals or if they are senior or low-income housing? Catholic health services is building it so it seems like it would be affiliated with some sort of service?
Hopefully they are senior or low-income…we have enough yuppie construction going on in this area as it is.

Wow, that block is going to get a whole lot busier soon. By my calculations between this, the Lincoln Square project, Blatsteins project, and the 1111 S. Broad St. project their will be at least 1100 new apartments!
