Should Newbold Neighbors Association be renamed to better represent the area?
Many residents have mixed-feelings about the neighborhood name “Newbold,” which spans from Broad Street to 18th Street and from Washington Avenue to West Passyunk Avenue. Some call it Newbold, while others still consider the area as Point Breeze.
Newbold Neighbors Association, which was established in 2007, will be touching on the issue at an upcoming meeting. NNA will be asking residents if the neighborhood group should be renamed to better represent the diversity of residents that live in the area, not just the emphasis on the “new.”
At the general meeting on Wednesday, July 27, the neighborhood group will vote to either keep the current name, or change it to something that may be a better representation of the neighborhood. If it is decided that the name will be changed, they will then be taking name suggestions through August, to be voted on at the general meeting happening that month.

What’s in a name? I’m not too familiar with civic goings-on west of Broad, but Newbold is to Point Breeze, essentially, what West Berlin was to the post-War GDR, or what the Vatican is to Rome. Frankly, Point Breeze and their civic association would probably benefit greatly by absorbing the NNA and their young ambition, but from what I understand, the Breezies don’t care much for outsiders coming in and trying to clean up their neighborhood. A civic association merger of sorts could transform that entire area, but it seems Newbold Neighbors is really only looking for a new name, the way they chose the name “Newbold” itself to differentiate it from the rest of Point Breeze in the first place. A perfect name change for this ideal compromise could be NEW BREEZE, as the Winds of Change are certainly beginning to blow westward.

Just cut it in half. It’s two areas: Point Longacre and OFC Breeze.

You’re not wrong that it’s Point Breeze (and i like the name as well) but really that’s a name for a huge map of land… What “neighborhood” assoc. is going to represent an area so large for the benefit of all? Get off of your high horse and recognize that certain areas of the city can and should be represented. Call it all South Philadelphia and pat yourself on the back.

WTF ??!! Why do hipsters always gotta move into a neighborhood and give it a booshie name? ex..”LOMO”, “the Breeze”, “NoLibs”,….ugh !!!! You’re outsiders. All these neighborhoods had a deep history way before you moved there from the suburbs. Stop trying to change it just b/c you want your new neighborhood to have a cool name, so people will think your a hip, slick urbanite !
